Shaping the Future of Indo-Maldives Relations
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer in New Delhi, emphasising the importance of mutual interests and reciprocal sensitivity in Indo-Maldivian relations. The meeting comes at a critical juncture, as bilateral ties have faced challenges following the election of a pro-China president Mohamed Muizzu in the Maldives last year.
Dr Jaishankar underscored India's long standing role as a key provider of development assistance to the Maldives, highlighting past collaborations that have enhanced the security and well-being of the island nation through shared activities, equipment provisioning, capacity building, and training. Despite recent strains, both ministers reflected on the enduring history of bilateral partnership characterised by mutual respect and understanding.
Zameer's visit to India holds significant importance, as he conveyed a message of reconciliation and understanding between the governments of Maldives and India. He acknowledged the regrettable remarks made by former Maldivian ministers towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and assured that appropriate actions are being taken to prevent such incidents from recurring. He emphasised that both nations have moved past this stage, signifying a willingness to repair and strengthen bilateral relations.
However, challenges persist, particularly regarding the Maldives' diplomatic tilt towards China. President Mohamed Muizzu's decision to prioritise visits to Turkey and China over India has raised eyebrows in New Delhi, sparking concerns about Beijing's growing influence in the strategically situated Indian Ocean archipelago.
India remains vigilant, closely monitoring regional developments to safeguard its national and economic security interests. This week India deployed 3 Naval ships in the South China Sea with an eye on China’s increasing belligerence in the Indo-Pacific. The meeting between Jaishankar and Zameer shows India's proactive approach to foster constructive dialogue and strengthen ties with its maritime neighbour. It reaffirms the enduring value of the Indo-Maldivian partnership and the shared commitment to mutual prosperity and stability in the region.
