Parity in Canadian diplomatic presence in India

The Government of Canada released a statement on October 19 regarding the diplomatic presence in India, prompting a response from the Indian government. On 20th October, citing the state of bilateral relations and increased Canadian diplomatic presence in India, India emphasized the need for mutual diplomatic parity between New Delhi and Ottawa. Engagements between the two sides over the past month have aimed to establish the details and implementation procedures of this parity.

India asserted that its actions align with Article 11.1 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which allows the receiving state to impose reasonable and normal limits on the size of a diplomatic mission. The Indian government rejected any accusations of violating international norms in the pursuit of diplomatic parity with Canada.
