Jaishankar Bolsters Ties with Malaysia
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's recent visit to Malaysia has solidified the commitment to enhancing the bilateral relationship between India and Malaysia. During his visit from March 27 to 28, Mr. Jaishankar met with top Malaysian officials, including Prime Minister Anwar Bin Ibrahim, to discuss key areas of cooperation under the India-Malaysia Enhanced Strategic Partnership.
One significant outcome of the visit was Prime Minister Anwar's commitment to facilitate the establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) branch campus in Malaysia. This move is expected to strengthen educational ties between the two countries further. Additionally, Prime Minister Anwar expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India's support during Malaysia's rice shortage and hoped for continued collaboration on importing agricultural produce from India.
Mr. Jaishankar also held productive discussions with his Malaysian counterpart, Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan, covering various aspects of bilateral cooperation such as political, trade and economic, defence, digital, cultural, and education sectors. Both ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. During his visit, EAM also engaged with the vibrant Indian diaspora in Malaysia, acknowledging their significant role in strengthening India-Malaysia relations.
Malaysia's pivotal role as India's key partner in ASEAN and its Act East Policy highlights the necessity of global collaboration. In our interconnected world shaped by globalisation, fostering strong partnerships like India and Malaysia is crucial for global growth and cooperation. This partnership benefits the two nations directly and promotes stability across Asia. It embodies the spirit of international cooperation needed to tackle global challenges and seize shared opportunities for progress.
