India's Swift Disaster Aid to Papua New Guinea
India's support for Papua New Guinea (PNG) spans diverse sectors, from healthcare to education and disaster relief. The donation of 7.2 million doses of anti-retroviral drugs, financial grants for IT equipment, and substantial aid for earthquake and volcanic eruption relief showcase India's multifaceted assistance. Furthermore, the contribution of 132,000 doses of AstraZeneca Vaccine for PNG's 2022 elections and active involvement in the electoral process affirm India's integral role in PNG's development and welfare.
Recently, India has initiated a humanitarian mission to assist the people of Papua New Guinea affected by the recent volcanic eruption. Following the announcement of a US$1 million relief assistance, a dedicated charter flight carrying approximately 11 tonnes of disaster relief material and 6 tonnes of medical aid has been dispatched to Port Moresby. The relief supplies include essential items such as tents, sleeping mats, hygiene kits, meals ready to eat, water storage tanks, as well as crucial medical provisions like medicines, surgical items, sanitary pads, rapid antigen test kits, pregnancy test kits, mosquito repellents, and baby food. This endeavour underscores India's commitment to providing timely and comprehensive support in times of crisis.
