India's G77 Gifts To Uganda

The Government of India, in a gesture of solidarity and support, has donated 10 executive buses, 5 ambulances, 10 tractors, and 2,664 flags and flagpoles to Uganda. This generous contribution is aimed at facilitating Uganda's hosting of the Non-Aligned Movement and G77 Summit. The commitment was made by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar to Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Odongo Jeje during their meeting at the 78th UNGA session.

Uganda, preparing to host the G77 summit, stands at the forefront of the largest coalition of developing nations. This summit has become a pivotal platform for the global south to express and advance its collective economic interests and strengthen its negotiating power on major international economic issues.

The relationship between India and Uganda is rooted in a rich history, dating back to the early 20th century with the arrival of Indians in Uganda. Over the years, this relationship has flourished, covering diverse areas including politics, defence, economy, culture, education, health, and tourism. The bilateral ties were further solidified during the pandemic through India’s healthcare assistance and the Vaccine Maitri initiative.

A significant leap in this partnership was marked by the inauguration of the first foreign campus of India's National Forensic Sciences University in Jinja, Uganda by Dr. Jaishankar in August 2023. This establishment symbolises the deep educational and scientific cooperation between the two nations. From 2015 to 2020, Indian investments in Uganda have been substantial, with approximately $547 million in Foreign Direct Investment. This financial engagement underscores the strong economic bond and mutual commitment to growth and development shared by India and Uganda.
