India Supports Philippines in South China Sea


The recent visit of India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Manila added a significant dimension to the India-Philippines relationship. During his trip, EAM Jaishankar reiterated India's firm support for the Philippines in upholding its national sovereignty. This declaration comes in the backdrop of the Philippines' maritime disputes in the South China Sea, highlighting India's commitment to the principles of international law and the freedom of navigation.


India and the Philippines share a history of cultural exchanges dating back centuries, forming a solid foundation for their modern relationship. Recent years have seen a rise in bilateral trade, surpassing USD 3 billion in 2023. Both countries are exploring opportunities to enhance economic engagement, particularly in sectors like information technology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and renewable energy.


Both countries have also strengthened their defence cooperation. They are keen on continued collaboration, including regular official-level interactions, opening a resident defence attaché office in Manila, and considering India's offer for concessional line of credit to meet Philippines' defence needs. Plans for naval asset acquisition and expanding joint exercises on maritime security and disaster response underline their commitment to upholding a safe Indo-Pacific. India has also offered assistance in hydrography and maritime affairs, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to enhancing security ties with the Philippines. Agreements on enhanced maritime cooperation and white shipping have been crucial in bolstering this strategic partnership.


Looking ahead, there is immense potential for further deepening the India-Philippines partnership. Both countries have expressed a commitment to exploring new avenues of cooperation, including emerging sectors such as fintech, digitalisation & green energy. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations between India and the Philippines are also expected to provide a significant boost to trade and investment ties.
