India Highlights Talent Pool of BIMSTEC
The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) connects seven nations around the Bay of Bengal, bridging South and Southeast Asia. This coalition includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand.
For the first time since its inception in 1997, BIMSTEC is hosting a sports event - the BIMSTEC Aquatic Championship in New Delhi, scheduled from February 5-10, 2024. Initially planned for 2021 but delayed due to the pandemic, this event was inaugurated by Anurag Thakur, Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India and Mr Dig Bahadur Limbu, Minister of Youth and Sports, Government of Nepal, on February 6, 2024. Over 400 athletes and officials from member countries are participating, showcasing the region's youthful demographic and sporting prowess. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 4th BIMSTEC Summit in 2018, the championship underscores India's dedication to fostering regional cooperation and global recognition of the BIMSTEC countries, aligning with India's commitment to prioritising its neighbours and empowering the Global South.
