India Calls for Zero Tolerance Policy towards terrorism
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Astana, Indian Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane articulated India's unwavering resolve in the fight against terrorism, urging for a "zero-tolerance approach" essential for the prosperity and development of SCO member states. He reiterated India's longstanding proposal for a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations, advocating for unified action against terrorism in all its forms.
Additionally, Aramane shed light on India's strategic initiative, Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), designed to foster cooperation and security in the Indo-Pacific. The summit witnessed the signing of a protocol by defence ministers from all SCO member states, affirming their collective dedication to combatting terrorism and promoting unity among nations.
India, having reduced violent incidents by 62% between 2014 and 2023, remains steadfast in its fight against terrorism. With firsthand experience of its horrors, India emerges as a leading voice in the global anti-terrorism movement. In December 2023 at the UN, India's permanent representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj highlighted the role of a collective "zero-tolerance policy" in tackling terrorism worldwide. She communicated how the increase in volume and the quality of the arsenal acquired by such terrorist organisations is a reminder that they enjoy the support and sponsorship of states, which is why the world needs to take a firmer stand on terrorism, just like India has for years.
India's proactive engagement in shaping the SCO's agenda reflects its role as a responsible stakeholder, advocating for inclusive efforts to counter terrorism and ensure sustainable regional development.
