Cementing a Historical Bond Between Two Nations
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent two-day visit to Bhutan marked a significant milestone in the close relationship between the two nations. This visit, which concluded with productive talks and key agreements, highlighted the depth of engagement between Prime Minister Modi and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. The visit also saw Prime Minister Modi being honoured with the prestigious ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo’ award, marking the first time a foreign Head of Government to receive this distinction and symbolising the enduring bond between India and Bhutan.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi pledged ₹10,000 crore in support of Bhutan's development over the next five years, emphasising India's commitment to its neighbour's progress. A notable achievement was the signing of agreements in crucial areas such as petroleum supply, food safety collaboration, and energy efficiency. These agreements not only strengthen economic ties but also reflect a shared commitment to sustainable development and regional stability.
In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Tobgay jointly inaugurated a modern hospital for women and children in Thimphu, built with Indian assistance. Additionally, the discussions during the visit also addressed the ongoing border dispute between China and Bhutan, particularly in the Doklam region. PM Modi reiterated India's unwavering support for Bhutan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasising the importance of peaceful resolution of border issues for regional stability.
This visit not only strengthens the strategic partnership between the two nations but also reinforces India's commitment to supporting the growth and development of its neighbours.
