An Unbreakable Friendship

Nepal's Foreign Secretary, Ms. Sewa Lamsal, undertook a significant diplomatic mission to India from February 27 to March 1, 2024. In bilateral discussions with Indian Foreign Secretary Shri Vinay Kwatra in New Delhi, Ms Lamsal aimed to enhance cooperation across various domains. Her visit also included participation in the 8th Asia Economic Dialogue 2024 held in Pune on February 29, 2024, emphasising regional economic cooperation and strategic dialogue. The ties between India and Nepal, marked by an open border and deep-rooted people-to-people contacts of kinship and culture, highlight their unique friendship and cooperation.

Ms Lamsel highlighted that Nepal's economy is turning around for good after the setback faced during COVID-19. India's pivotal role in this positive shift is evident; in 2023, it traded $504 million in exports and $55.5 million in imports with Nepal, cementing its position as Nepal's largest trading partner. This economic exchange shows the strength of their ties. In addition, in its 2024-25 interim budget presentation, India has proposed a $7 billion annual grant to Nepal, which is the second-highest amount proposed to any country, reflecting India's continued commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy.

The strategic collaboration extends beyond economics, encompassing cultural, educational, and defence cooperation. Nepal's Foreign Minister, N.P Saud mentioned the significance of a stable and peaceful Indian Ocean at the conference, an agenda that India has been working towards as a leader. It has been building economic capabilities and improving maritime security for its friends and partners through various programmes. N P Saud stressed the Indian Ocean's stability for Nepal's trade routes. Nepal and other South Asian nations stand to gain from India's India-Middle East-Europe Corridor, enhancing their connectivity to Europe and Russia. Such projects and maritime collaborations reflect India's commitment to creating prosperity for South Asia.

In a rapidly changing global landscape, the partnership between India and Nepal stands out as a beacon of shared values. Despite concerns over China's increasing interest in Asia, the bond between India and Nepal remains unshakeable. This enduring relationship across borders is a testament to the strength of friendship amid complex global dynamics and shifting alliances.
