Hamas' Al-Asef Underwater Vehicle Capabilities Revealed
A newly revealed image from Israeli sources offers an unprecedented look into Hamas' homemade underwater vehicle, the Al-Asef. This torpedo-like weapon, utilized in several attacks against Israeli targets, has yet to achieve significant success. Despite the new insight, the image leaves certain aspects of the Al Asef's design and capabilities unclear. Constructed with a metal body, possibly from repurposed compressed gas cylinders, the Al-Asef features a warhead at its front. Its diving capabilities are limited, reaching only a few meters below the surface, and it may use a snorkel system to supply air to its engine. The propulsion mechanism remains somewhat ambiguous, though a hollow hose hints at an internal combustion engine, potentially powered by gasoline. The rear part of the Al-Asef, including the screw, seems to be adapted from an older diver propulsion vehicle. The Al-Asef is manually operated by a human pilot, which makes it vulnerable to communication jamming. It is steered using large control surfaces at the back. For navigation and targeting, it might employ a GoPro-style camera or rely on positioning data. Reports suggests the existence of at least two such devices, with the possibility of more being constructed. It seems that Israel has captured at least one of these underwater vehicles. The development and use of the Al-Asef highlight ongoing efforts in unconventional maritime warfare tactics in the region.
