Aimed at addressing societal challenges and promoting peace, prosperity, and inclusivity, these initiatives serve as catalysts for transformative change. Equipping participants with leadership skills such as insight-led leadership, visionary leadership, entrepreneurship, and changemaking skills. Fostering personal transformation among participants. I think this is a major problem in Kashmir. If we can change individual mindsets, it won't take long for society to change.” Another fellow expressed, “This program has given me a chance to meet like-minded people and discuss the issues our society is facing. Hence, I believe if we all work together for a common cause we can add more value and come to some solution.” Recently, in March 2024, Bridge Institute organised J&amp;K Changemakers Breakthrough Fellowship in collaboration with TimeCode Events and Infinity Club. Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Secretary of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, J&amp;K, addressed participants and emphasised the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone to achieve personal growth.&nbsp;The fellowship aims to empower youth through leadership and decision-making skills. Featuring sessions with government officers, academics, and business experts, the program supports personal and professional development over six months, enhancing youth potential and exposure to international economy and market trends. The evolving legacy of the Kashmir Fellowships continues to illuminate the path towards a more peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive society. These initiatives reaffirm the need for spaces and conversations that facilitate innovation and an unwavering commitment to societal progress. On a trip to India last year, I had the opportunity to meet with visionary SEWA leaders, including Jyoti Macwan and Smita Bhatnagar who offered a glimpse into the rich tapestry of SEWA's history and ethos. Founded in the early 1970s by the indefatigable champion of women's rights and Gandhian principles, Ela Bhatt, SEWA continues to embody her values of service and transformation. By providing technical training, access to microfinance, market linkages, and leveraging technology, SEWA equips women with the tools and resources needed to thrive in their chosen trades. From agriculture to artisanal crafts, SEWA supports women to not only earn a livelihood but also to assert their value in the workforce. By nurturing talent from within, SEWA impressively ensures that 80% of its leadership team is developed internally and promoted within the organisation. This commitment to upward mobility not only fosters a culture of empowerment but also serves as a testament to the organisation's dedication to its members' holistic growth and greater vision.&nbsp; 2. Sustainable Economic Growth: SEWA's Role in Building Resilient CommunitiesThrough initiatives like the SEWA Bazaar and SEWA Managerial School, the organisation enables women to become leaders and entrepreneurs in their own right. By harnessing the power of digitalisation and modernisation, SEWA ensures that traditional trades like artisanal crafts remain relevant in an ever-evolving economy. A prime example of SEWA's impact is the story of Sharda, whom I had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with as we travelled to one of SEWA’s farmer’s cooperatives. Sharda is a testament to the transformative power of education and empowerment. Thanks to SEWA’s partnership with the Head Held High Foundation [<a href="https://induslens.com/category/India-and-the-SDGs/pursuing-sdg-1-300--30-hours-to-escape-poverty" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pursuing SDG 1: $300 &amp; 30 Hours to Escape Poverty</a>], Sharda was eligible for several educational programs where she gained confidence as a leader and developed the skills necessary to uplift her community. Since her initial enrolment in 1998, she has become fluent in English and now runs a SEWA community. 3. Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship: SEWA's Vision for the Next GenerationRecognising the importance of engaging the younger generation, SEWA has adapted its approach to meet the evolving needs and interests of the younger members. By incorporating technological solutions and modernising traditional trades, SEWA ensures that the next generation is armed with the skills and resources needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Observing their fascination with technology, this initiative maintains the relevance of these trades while moving with the times to ensure the youth remain engaged with and continue nurturing these important cultural pillars. Developing Leaders, One Woman at a TimeDuring my visit, I had the privilege of meeting Niru, a second-generation SEWA member who generously shared insights into the farming structure. With her mother-in-law preceding her as a SEWA member, Niru's involvement underscores the organisation’s intergenerational impact. ﻿<img src="https://imedia-prod-assets.engro.in/poster-image/6631b8cf0d93730001adbd2d"> Beyond its economic contributions, SEWA's influence extends into the realm of social change. Niru highlighted how SEWA's ethos of sisterhood and solidarity has proven instrumental in reducing instances of domestic violence within member communities. This ripple effect not only transforms individual lives but also uplifts entire families, lighting the path towards a safer and more equitable future. Niru also explained the impact SEWA had within her own family, noting how her husband's upbringing differed from others as a child of a SEWA member. This generational shift illustrates the enduring legacy of empowerment propagated by SEWA, shaping future generations and fostering a cycle of progress and resilience. Indeed, SEWA's commitment to uplifting women one at a time is not just a slogan but a tangible driver of positive change that reverberates throughout the community.&nbsp; Niru herself embodies the organisation's commitment to empowering future leaders. With a 15-year background in organic farming, and now as a manager within her cooperative, Niru emphasised the value of education, particularly proficiency in English, in enabling the members to enhance market linkages and business opportunities. Through SEWA's support, Niru and others like her are breaking barriers and reshaping the landscape of economic opportunity for generations to follow. Cultivating ConnectionThe ladies at the cooperative greeted me with immense kindness and invited me to share a traditional meal, comprising delicious, healthy ingredients, including millet grain. During our time together, amidst language barriers, I experienced an overwhelming sense of love, reminding me that compassion is intrinsic to our humanity. This experience underscored the transformative potential of solidarity and the power of sisterhood. Drawing inspiration from the profound life and teachings of Gandhiji, the program was designed to be an immersive and life-altering journey, offering participants profound opportunities for personal growth and influence on their external environment. Through introspection and the exploration of timeless values, participants uncover their inner challenges and deepest desires; on the path to discovering their true purpose. At the heart of Lead Like Gandhi is the recognition of Mahatma Gandhi as the epitome of a Being-Centered leader, one who continually delved within himself, experimented, and extended the truths he discovered to others, thereby reshaping the course of history. Participants learn the art of leading from this authentic, Being-Centered perspective.&nbsp; Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to dress comfortably, with a preference for Indian attire such as kurtas, although it's not mandatory. The immersion into this transformative experience requires a temporary disconnection from external distractions, with limited phone usage permitted for essential communication only. Commencing each day between 7-8 am, participants are urged to arrive punctually and to be present while sharing meals. Guided by the gracious guardian, Lata, I gleaned invaluable lessons in concentration, patience, and belief from this simple yet profound experience. Reflecting on Gandhi's legacy, I realise how these virtues were instrumental in India's transformation and are equally pertinent to anyone seeking growth. This special moment was a powerful reminder that true change comes after cultivating patience, concentration, and unwavering belief within ourselves. The principles of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings—non-violence, truth, compassion, and radical love—resonate profoundly in today's tumultuous world. The emphasis is on leadership that doesn't just preach but inspires through action—leading by example or "walking the talk." Nestled within the sanctity of the Gandhi ashram and other Gandhian institutions, participants gathered from around the world for this week long intensive. We were presented with a variety of exercises, urging us to confront our innermost fears head-on and engage in deep introspection regarding how we could harness our abilities in the service of others.&nbsp; One of the most poignant moments during my journey with the “Lead Like Gandhi” program was when we were tasked with taking to the streets of Ahmedabad for a couple of hours, stripped of our phones and money, with the purpose of connecting with members of the community. Initially, the prospect of navigating without these modern crutches left me feeling a bit apprehensive, fearing I might get lost in the bustling city. However, what unfolded was nothing short of insightful. As I wandered through the streets, I found myself immersed in the beauty of human connection. Despite the language barriers, I was reminded that the essence of human communication transcends words alone. Among the many encounters I had, one that stood out was meeting a young man named Arja. He proudly showcased pictures of his beloved wife and child, radiating joy as he shared snippets of their newlywed life. Together, we walked for a while, and I marvelled at the simplicity and depth of our interaction. I also had the privilege of meeting a group of ladies from Rajasthan, whose colourful attire and intricate henna art acted as a testament to their rich culture. Their excitement about an upcoming wedding celebration was infectious, and they graciously invited me to share in their joy. In those fleeting hours, each interaction left an indelible mark on me,&nbsp;no matter how brief. The experience served as a poignant reminder of the profound impact we can have on one another simply by being fully present and open to the richness of shared experiences.&nbsp; Afterwards, all participants returned to share and discuss their encounters, and it was clear that an overarching leadership lesson was gifted to us all: human connection holds tremendous power and the transformative potential to foster collaboration, empathy, and collective progress.&nbsp; OUTCOMES Promoting Collaboration and PartnershipsSDG 17 stresses the significance of forming partnerships for sustainable development. In a global landscape marred by economic disparities and social injustices, addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time is crucial – even if it may sometimes seem daunting. Mahatma Gandhi stated that “poverty is the worst form of violence.” As of 2024, over 700 million individuals are living below the poverty line around the world, surviving on less than $1.90 per day. Thus, there remains a collective responsibility to seek solutions and take action.&nbsp; Considering the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, it's clear that achieving ‘SDG 1: No Poverty’ is critical for realising the broader ambitions of the SDGs. It has become evident that donations alone are not sufficient to drive tangible change. It is essential that we unlock empathy on a global level and foster meaningful human connections. By offering an act of profound compassion to help another person, we can each contribute to a more equitable world. Have you ever pondered, “How can I make a difference?” The thought - how can I genuinely improve the lives of those in need, beyond just monetary contributions? - must inspire us to explore deeper. The Case of MaltiConsider Malti, a young woman ensnared in the vicious cycle of poverty. Through the 'One for One' program's framework, a generous donor steps in, offering Malti both financial aid ($300) and mentorship (30 hours), vital tools in her journey towards self-improvement. This act of compassion and commitment serves as a catalyst for remarkable change unfolding over the course of three years.&nbsp; It is not only Malti whose life is set on a new trajectory, her family will also reap the benefits of being lifted from the depths of despair. As a mentor, you have the power to help Malti author a new chapter in her life: one where she breaks free from the chains of poverty and soars towards a future filled with potential. <img src="https://imedia-prod-assets.engro.in/poster-image/6631b7c10d93730001adbd2a"> A Catalyst for ChangeThe solution lies in the ‘One for One’ program: a transformative model created, refined, and proven effective by the Head Held High Foundation. With a proven track record, it has already benefited thousands of individuals. This initiative empowers rural individuals, through functional education, to integrate into society as skilled members of the workforce. Young women like Malti acquire the skills necessary to secure employment or establish a small business within 6 months. The program is designed to support Malti, and subsequently her family, in escaping the poverty cycle, by equipping her with the capabilities and support she needs to forge a new path in life. Your gift of 30 hours, spread over three years, holds great significance for ensuring this outcome becomes a reality. The 1-1 virtual mentoring sessions provide guidance and support for thousands of individuals, just like Malti. In recognition of the fact that there is likely no family member or friend in her close environment to support her, the guide’s role is crucial in letting her know that she is not alone in the process. As her life will significantly evolve in a swift timeframe, this external belief anchors her transformation. One for One: An Effective SolutionThis innovative initiative, rooted in education, employment, and empowerment, has the power to unlock human potential and capability. This program showcases a promising approach to social impact by transforming individual lives while simultaneously contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly ‘SDG 1: No Poverty’. Grounded by a firm commitment to address the underlying causes of impoverishment and inequality, ‘One for One’ emphasises the pivotal roles of education and employment in breaking the poverty cycle. This initiative aims to offer marginalised individuals access to quality functional education and sustainable livelihood opportunities.&nbsp; During my visit to one of their educational centres in Bangalore last summer, I was deeply impressed by the exceptional quality of the program. I interacted with a group of new candidates beginning their transformative 6 month journey and had the opportunity to meet a recent program graduate, among others. The first time I learned about the project was in 2019, when I was introduced to the founder and now dear friend, Sunil Savara. Witnessing the outcomes first hand was a deeply moving experience, and one that opened my mind to the profound impact made possible by solutions such as ‘One for One’.&nbsp; Education Driving TransformationAt the heart of the ‘One for One’ program is a strong belief in education as a catalyst for positive change. By offering candidates from marginalised backgrounds pathways to education and skill-building initiatives, the program equips them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to navigate the complexities of today's world and pursue fulfilling career opportunities. Through a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on training, and mentorship, participants are propelled towards a promising future, forging a path where their potential can be unleashed. <img src="https://imedia-prod-assets.engro.in/poster-image/6631b7e216e0800001bc0c52"> Creating Jobs and Empowering Economically&nbsp;A key element of the ‘One for One’ program’s success lies in its dedication to job creation and economic empowerment. Understanding that sustainable livelihoods are crucial to escaping the poverty trap, the program diligently connects participants with employment opportunities that match their skills, passions, and career goals. By establishing partnerships with local businesses, industries, and employers, the program facilitates job placements and internships, offering participants invaluable practical experience and exposure to real-world work settings. Through these initiatives, individuals not only secure stable incomes: a domino effect unfolds, and they become agents of change, fostering economic growth and progress within their communities.&nbsp; Impact Assessment and Outcomes&nbsp;Since its inception, ‘One for One’ has yielded tangible and far-reaching outcomes, redefining the lives of countless individuals and communities. Through rigorous impact assessments and monitoring mechanisms, the program has been able to track and evaluate its effectiveness in achieving its stated objectives. Key indicators of success include increased enrolment rates in education and training programs, higher rates of employment and income generation among participants, and improved socio-economic indicators within target communities. Moreover, anecdotal evidence and personal testimonies attest to the profound impact of the program on individual lives, with participants expressing newfound confidence, self-reliance, and optimism for the future. One of Many Success StoriesPavan Kumar, a 28-year-old from the remote village of Perupalem in Andhra Pradesh, has emerged as a shining example of perseverance and determination despite coming from humble beginnings. Pavan put his family first and sacrificed his own aspirations to work in the fields to earn money for his family. His father earns just 50,000 INR (approximately 600 USD) per year as a farmer, and following in his footsteps, he resigned himself to a life with limited resources and missed out on higher education opportunities. However, his life took a turn when he was introduced to an employability training program by the Head Held High Foundation through a friend. Initially timid and reserved, Pavan slowly began to come out of his shell during the program. He actively participated in team activities and honed his communication and computer skills. By the end of the training, Pavan had transformed into a confident, well-equipped individual. In July 2023, Pavan graduated from the employability training program, receiving praise from the district leadership. He subsequently landed a job as a sales executive at a mobile retail store, marking the beginning of his professional journey. He later joined the Head Held High Foundation as a mobiliser, successfully coordinating training batches as a role model for incoming students. Pavan's perseverance really paid off when he secured an interview with a large organisation in the oil and gas industry. After a series of successful interviews, he was offered a role with a monthly salary of 36,000 INR (approximately 430 USD). Overjoyed and grateful, Pavan celebrated this achievement with his loved ones, extending his heartfelt thanks to the Head Held High Foundation for reigniting his enthusiasm and aspirations. His success story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that through hard work and dedication, anything is possible.&nbsp; Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)The ‘One for One’ program significantly contributes to several SDG goals and targets, particularly ‘SDG 1: No Poverty’, ‘SDG 4: Quality Education’, and ‘SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth’. By offering education, skill development, and sustainable livelihood opportunities to individuals, the program actively combats poverty, promotes economic empowerment, and fosters social inclusion. Additionally, by prioritising marginalised communities and vulnerable populations, the program embodies the core principle of ensuring that no one is left behind, as outlined in the SDGs. Through its comprehensive approach to development, the program sets a powerful example for effective and impactful poverty alleviation efforts worldwide. ‘One for One’ is far more than a training program; it is a philosophy anchored in human compassion. The underlying belief of ‘One for One’ is that by pairing every individual living in poverty with a dedicated mentor, they can overcome their circumstances and no longer be considered impoverished.&nbsp; Simon ‘Mac’ Mackenzie, CEO of Bridge Institute, had this to say about his experience as a guide: “I had the honour to work alongside an inspiring young woman who was going through the program (in 2019) and was able to see her personal transformation. ‘One for One’ has had a massive impact on me personally. It’s made me more committed to eradicating inequality in my community, and it’s made me more compassionate and empathetic as a human being. Poverty is a human made construct, and it doesn’t need to exist, and I cannot think of a more powerful program than ‘One for One’ for eradicating poverty.” I believe that the ‘One for One’ program, designed, tested, and proven effective by the Head Held High Foundation, has the potential to be scaled globally to eradicate poverty. I have yet to experience another program that is so easy to support and so profound in its impact. By prioritising education, employment, and empowerment, the program has positively impacted countless individuals and communities, paving the way for a more just, inclusive, and sustainable future. As we focus on expanding this impactful initiative, let us remain dedicated to inclusivity and ensuring no one is left behind. Every individual deserves to live a life with their head held high.
